The Words of the Nikkah
What is recited when a nikkah is performed – khutbah, ijab-qubool and dua.
Part 1
Khutbah-e-Masnoonah (Sermon of the Nikkah)
إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ، وَنَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا وَمِنْ سَيِّئَاتِ أَعْمَالِنَا، مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللَّهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ، وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
All praise belongs to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger.
Part 2
Three Verses of the Qur’an
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ
Āl-e-ʿImrān 3:102 – Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًا كَثِيرًا وَنِسَاءً ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالْأَرْحَامَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا
An-Nisā 4:1 – O mankind, fear your Lord who created you from one soul and created from it its mate… and fear Allah through whom you ask one another, and the ties of kinship.
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا
Al-Aḥzāb 33:70–71 – Fear Allah and speak words of truth; He will rectify your deeds and forgive your sins.
Part 3
Ijāb & Qubool (Offer & Acceptance)
کیا آپ نے فلاں بنت فلاں کو، شرعی حقِ مہر کے عوض، دو گواہوں کی موجودگی میں اپنے نکاح میں قبول کیا؟
میں نے قبول کیا۔ (قبول ہے ۔ قبول ہے ۔ قبول ہے)
The Qazi asks: “Do you accept [bride’s name], daughter of [father’s name], in marriage with the agreed mahr, in the presence of these witnesses?” The groom answers clearly: “I accept” (Qubool hai), three times.
Part 4
Dua for the Couple
بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ
May Allah bless you, shower His blessings upon you, and bring you together in goodness.
These are the customary words of the nikkah. Exact wording and order may vary slightly according to the Qazi’s guidance and the family’s school of thought.
